The Interview with Sam Yeager of Spring Solar
#1 Can you tell us briefly about the history of your company?
Sam: Yes, I initially was a financial advisor for Etrade and Wells Fargo, always loved finances, and during the summer of 2014 my wife would like to turn down the thermostat which made the air conditioner work harder, making the electric bill high in the Summer.
I would tell her to turn the thermostat up and she would tell me to keep it down. I wanted to keep my wife happy yet keep the electric bill from being sky high in the Summer. I brain stormed and solar started coming out in Utah. I got a lot of quotes, they were all super high, and I thought there is no way the price could be that high. I partnered with manufacturers, engineers, designers, installers, got it on my house for a fraction of the price.
Everything went perfect, helped my family members too, everything went perfect, then neighbors started asking “I want to go solar but not pay that outrageous price”, so I thought “hey, lets make this a business and mark it up a little bit vs the other guys a ton, so it’s a win/win situation.”
I helped them out, they referred me, then the domino effect of more and more referrals, then sales reps from other companies noticing, I told them my pricing, they started working for me, and they told their sales friends, and it just dominoed today, where we have over 100 people with us now.
#2 What type of solar panel technology do you offer, and what are the efficiency rates?
Sam: We offer UL listed, black on black monocrystalline panels. Typically they are 21.3%+ efficient.
#3 Do you offer a warranty for the solar system and installation? What does it cover?
Sam: Yes, 25 years on the parts, and 10 standard for labor but optional up to 30 years.
Installation Process
#4 What is the estimated timeline for the installation from start to finish?
Sam: Typically one to six weeks to go through permitting, then one to two day installs.
#5 Do you handle all the necessary permits and documentation required by the local government or utility company?
Sam: We do, yes.
#6 Do you subcontract any of the work, or is it all done by your employees?
Sam: We do both, but typically it is inhouse, or with trusted sub’s that we have worked with for years.
Costs and Financing of Solar Installation
#7 Do you offer financing options or assist with solar incentives and rebates?
Sam: We do offer financing options, and tax credits, or rebates from rocky mt for batteries.
#8 How does the payment schedule work?
Sam: Typically no money out of pocket, then monthly payments about the same as your current power bill but now part of the payment goes towards principal and doesn’t go up, and there is a pay off date.
#9 Do you provide a detailed breakdown of the costs and savings over time?
Sam: Yes we do.
#10 Is there a monitoring system included to track the performance of newly installed solar panels?
Sam: Yes, all our systems have monitoring.
Maintenance and Support
#11 Do you provide regular maintenance of installed solar systems?
Sam: There is none needed unless it is not producing what it is expected to. We love the low maintenance of solar.
#12 What is the process for troubleshooting issues or repairs?
Sam: We sometimes can troubleshoot remotely, and if that doesn’t fix it, we come out on site to fix or replace a part.
#13 How does your team handle unforeseen challenges or delays during the installation process?
Sam: We have installed in Utah for over 8 years, so we are used to any challenge that comes our way.
#14 Technology evolves rapidly. How does your company assist homeowners in upgrading or expanding their solar systems in the future?
Sam: Solar systems do not need to be upgraded, unless future usage goes up. If usage goes up, we can add panels in the future.
Final question: For homeowners who are still undecided, what direct message do you have for them about choosing your company?
Sam: Locally owned and operated, zero debt, very low overhead, high quality, lowest cost in Utah, with being around for 8 years. We currently install 50 to 100+ jobs a month here in Utah and growing every year due to high quality and value.
Why is Utah a good state for solar power?
Utah is undoubtedly one of the best states for harnessing solar power, thanks to its remarkable solar infrastructure and ideal climatic conditions. With a substantial 2,440 megawatts (MW) of solar capacity installed, Utah ranks 14th nationally.
Solar energy has become significant in this State. Since 2015, approximately 93% of all the new facilities and technologies that have been installed to produce electricity in Utah are solar-powered. This indicates a significant investment in solar power within the state, reflecting its commitment to expanding renewable energy sources.
The state’s solar advantage is further amplified by its status as one of the top 10 sunniest states in the U.S. Boasting an average of 238 sunny days per year and over five hours of sunlight daily, Utah surpasses even Florida in terms of optimal conditions for solar energy utilization.
The transition to solar energy in Utah is both savvy and beneficial for the environment. A typical residential solar panel system in Utah can generate between 1,300 to 1,600 kilowatt-hours (kWh) per year for each kilowatt (kW) of installed capacity. For instance, a 5-kW system could yield between 6,500 and 8,000 kWh annually.
Considering Utah’s average electricity rate of about $0.11 per kWh, homeowners could see annual savings of $715 to $880 on their electricity bills. The investment in solar typically pays for itself within 8 to 10 years, thanks to system size, local incentives, and generous state policies.
For homeowners looking to upgrade their energy solutions, choosing the right provider is crucial. It is essential to select a seasoned, professional company that not only installs high-quality solar panels but also ensures a smooth transition to solar energy for the next two decades or more.
